The Race Week Newspaper Is Back

Sisters Liza Tewell and Vicky MacFeidh are bringing back a longtime Race Week tradition with the daily newspaper to provide a recap of the major stories each day. This tangible souvenir, which has been missed by many these past few years, also gives racers something to take home to share with friends, family and coworkers who are interested to know what summer vacation is like at Race Week. The papers will be available for pick up at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club every morning.

Deception Pass Road Work - Plan Ahead

The Washington State Department of Transportation will be repaving sections of Hwy 20 including the Deception Pass bridge that will affect transportation to/from Whidbey Island during Race Week. Unfortunately, the actual dates will not be announced until 10 days in advance but it is due to start sometime in mid July. So please plan ahead and alert your crew who plan to travel at night for the Deception Pass bridge will be closed for 5 consecutive nights from 7:30 pm to 5:30 am and the only access to/from Whidbey Island during this closure will be the Mukilteo /Clinton ferry on the south side of the island. Camping

WIRW is still working very hard to secure the Navy base for camping. As you might imagine, however, times have changed and we're all confronted with more stringent post 9-11 requirements. It's a priority for us to secure a safe camping area and as information becomes available, we'll post updates on the website at http://whidbeyislandraceweek.com/log...g-and-camping/ You can also visit the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce website to find ideas at http://oakharborchamber.com/

Don't miss out!

And... Camping is now confirmed!

Racers, camping has been confirmed at the Navy base again for this year. The Navy is requiring, however, that all who camp on base property fill out a simple Hold Harmless form (stating that you won't sue if you hurt yourself on Navy property) and this form just asks for your signature and date. So, here's the official WIRW camping plan: the base is available to us July 17-25. All those who wish to camp can reserve a space by sending an e-mail with the dates you're requesting, whether you'll be in a tent or RV, and the best phone number to reach you. When you arrive at WIRW, please check in at registration to fill out your Hold Harmless form and receive a WIRW Camper's Pass for the Navy base. The costs to provide camping on the Navy base (permit, water, trash, portable restrooms, handwashing stations) is approx $3000. So we'll be asking campers to pitch in what they can to help us offset these costs so we can continue to coordinate a convenient camping arrangement for everyone. Any $ collected beyond the expenses will be donated to Oak Harbor Youth Sailing. Navy base camping reservations: schelleen@whidbeyislandraceweek.com. Please help us spread the word by sharing this post. See you at WIRW!

Early registration ends today!

Have you got your costume picked out for the Tuesday night screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show?

henryr 07-11-2015 12:08 PM

OR is looking for a couple of bodies to help with our delivery home for both OR and the support boat.

If there are any Vancouver sailors who are interested in joining us for a 2 day "cruise" back here after race week, please PM me.

Thanks!

10 to 20 knots for the first day. Started in a southerly under cloudy skies. Ended with a westerly under sunny skies. Number 3 weather for most of the day.

2 and a half minutes corrected between first and last in race one for Div 1 over a 90 minute race.

Good drinks and the traditional Penn Cove mussels for dinner.

It doesn't get any better than that.

Another amazing WIRW is in the books.

12 races over 5 days. Only one or two races sailed in winds less than 10 knots.

Only needed foulie pants for part of Monday and Friday. Never needed foulie jacket.

Extremely tight racing in Div 1, with less than 5 minutes separation between first and last corrected for most races.

We had fun playing with the Farr 39ML Absolutely (formerly Voodoo Child), along with two 1D35's, the Davidson 40, and a Melges 32. It would be great if Jack Rabbit and Raven would come down next year to add a couple of more fast 40's.

Full report and pictures soon to follow.

Next year might work for us. Also thinking of Oregon Offshore.

henryr 07-27-2015 02:45 PM

The dates next year have been selected to coincide with the best tides, so getting in and out of the marina isn't a problem. We had no issues this year.
