Default TCYC Vancouver Shenzhen Challenge

So more info is coming out on potential changes to the local sailing schedule.

Tiddly Cove Yacht Club is developing a weekend regatta in Vancouver that builds on their successful English Bay Scramble. It stems from an idea presented by TCYC member, Jackee Hui, who hosted the Big Boys Sailing team from Shenzhen China on his Beneteau 41, Handsome Dragon, in an evening TCYC Summer Shorts race last summer. The idea blossomed after Jackee and TCYC Past Commodore Harry Pratt participated in the China Cup Regatta in Shenzhen.

TCYC has issued a invitation to yacht clubs and race teams from Shenzhen to come and take on one of Vancouver's most difficult one day races (TCYC's English Bay Scramble (EBS)) and then to go head to head with the great sailors of Vancouver in a day of short course, around the cans racing.

The TCYC EBS will remain unchanged. A fun and approachable day of racing around the inner and outer reaches of English Bay, a great party and awards for the best finishers in a variety of Divisions and one design classes. Results will count as part of the VARC Distance Series.

What TCYC is planning to do is to to add a second day of racing following the English Bay Scramble. Short course races will be scored as a VARC Regatta. Results from the two events (distance and short course) will be aggregated and will lead to awards and a Trophy awarded to the winner of the Vancouver Shenzhen Challenge.

Teams from China have signaled interest. Big Boys Racing will be back as well as a team from the Guanzhao City Sailing Association.

We think it will be a fun and exciting weekend and an interesting opportunity to see how our skills match up against some teams from China.

This is very much in the early planning stages so watch this space (and the TCYC website and Facebook page!) for more info on what should be a very fun weekend!

Is the approach that the Shenzen Team(s) will charter local race boats or will you embed the visiting sailors on local boats?

At this point the plan is to charter local boats - it would be great if we could find 4-5 GP26!

Wow - this sounds like a herculean task to take on! Am I reading this wrong or are you planning on adding a second day of racing and VARC has agreed to score it as a regatta?

This should be an exchange program. Let's get a bunch of locals over there for a few races too

Yes. Two days of racing. One scored as Distance for VARC purposes (the traditional Scramble) and one scored as Regatta for VARC purposes (the short course Sunday racing).

Both days will aggregated together for TCYC scoring purposes.

The price will pretty much the same for both days as it was last year for just the Scramble. So if you decide you only want to do one day, it'll still be good value.
