Default My outboard keeps trying to kill me

The outboard on Flaming Redhead is perfect in every way, except one. The gear selector is on the starboard side of the engine, just below the cowl and about half way back. The F6 is also the last size of motor before they start to accept remote engine controls.

So, in order to change from forward/neutral/reverse I have to be standing at the back of the open transom, outside the lifelines, reaching back off the boat. I can't reach the tiller from here and I figure it's only a matter of time before I fall off the damn boat. It's also a bit of a nightmare for docking because of the stepping over lifelines, trying to drive but not reaching the tiller, and gymnastic maneuvers required when things don't go according to plan...

Before I start drilling holes in things and attaching all sorts of extending sticks to the lever (which is small and made of plastic...) anyone have any ideas or done similar before?

I think a rod drilled through the shifter could work. Do you back in or fwd in? Because is forward, I think you would just disengage 4 or 5 boatlengths away and coast in. Little boat shouldn't need reverse for brakes. I learned to dock in a 242 with the engine out the back, past the pulpit etc never really had a problem as long as we approached with some pace.

The other thing is, will your tiller attachment allow the tiller to flip over and point aft? Then you could do it all from the back of the bus.

I go bow in, and that's basically how I do it now. I throw it into neutral about 5 boatlengths out, but getting back there to do it and then back to driving/crashing can be exciting.

Yesterday we came back to the dock twice while trying to leave to pick up crew from another boat who wasn't going out - lots of back and forth inside the marina and it was a pain.

Flipping the tiller back I haven't tried so will give that a look this weekend - good idea. I'm sure it'll hit every runner, backstay and lifeline back there but definitely worth a shot.

I had the privilege to sail on a Choate 27 out of Burrard Civic. Similar challenges, this was mitigated by the skipper mounting a large tire on the main dock. I was handed the helm, unable to reach the engine controls, half throttle to battle the current.... I was told "aim for the tire".

So as a short term solution, mount a big tire on the dock and let some one else drive the boat into her slip.

Guar, I had seen that video but it looks to be for the older F6 before they re-did them. This one is from 2012 and I haven't been able to find an aftermarket one.

These remote things look heavy. What you need is a carbon fibre tube, the end of which is just large enough to slip over and grip the throttle handle, and if you cut a slot near the end slightly bigger than the shifter you just place it on the shifter and away you go.

That actually sounds like a good plan for the throttle.

I think that a separate, more securely mounted rod for the shifter would provide easier manoeuvring. Hobby stores sell some pretty decent non-rusting plastic ones for R/C models (See "Step 18" on this page http://www.tamiyausa.com/articles/bu...7#.VU0tE0v9OJc), or you could try the marine chandleries or an automotive parts supply place, or even a wrecking yard (lots of snap-together throttle linkages on old German cars). You just need a beefy enough ball-joint fitting to take the loads adequately. If you get something that has a threaded ball fitting, you could probably just drill and tap the gear lever and screw the ball fitting in place, then snap your shift rod on and off as necessary.

Throttle is sorted out - thankfully someone makes a $20 plastic tiller extension which I've clamped on and works great.

I'll play with a couple ideas with PVC pipe and see if we can get proof of concept.
