Default Course: Coastal & Offshore Marine Weather & Passage Planning

The VRC is putting on a Coastal & Offshore Marine Weather & Passage Planning course. It is open to both VRC members and non-members. Please pass the info on people you think maybe interested. Thanks

Coastal & Offshore Marine Weather & Passage Planning

Purpose & Benefits:

When prudent mariners prepare for coastal and offshore passages, they plan their departure to coincide with the most favourable weather conditions and then constantly monitor the developing weather situation to avoid threats or at least surprises. This course will provide helpful instruction on weather forecasting basics, coastal and offshore weather threats, passage planning resources and tools, offshore communication and how to access and use weather forecasting information when at sea.

The course will be presented over two full days, starting with an introduction to weather systems and ending with actual offshore voyage scenarios involving changing conditions and threatening weather. The course is divided into 5 modules:

1. Weather System Overview

2. Weather Threats

3. Passage Planning

4. Getting Weather Data at Sea

5. Putting It All Together

The instructor for the course is Norm Cooper. While not a meteorologist, he is an experienced offshore sailor who has safely completed a 25,000 mile trip across the South Pacific to New Zealand and back with his wife, Beth. Norm is a certified ISPA sailing instructor.
