Default Garmin GPS problems

I have a Garmin GPSmap 172c that has suddenly lost it's ability to locate satellites. Apparently this is not an uncommon problem and is sometimes solved with a software update. Unfortunately this generation of gps used a proprietary memory card, and usb card programer. Has anyone experienced this problem? Has anyone got a card and programmer?

Another possibility is that the external antenna has failed, but to test that theory I need to find someone with a similar unit so that I can plug in to their antenna and see if it works.

Try to see if you can manually input an aproxiamte position, ie 49 degrees 15 minutes and -123 20. Sometimes if it gets reset and it thinks it is at 0 longitude and 0 latitude it is searching in the wrong place and takes forever to load an alamnac.

Try the Garmin help too

Thanks I will try that!

The garmin site just says to update software, but that seems to be their response to alot of problems!

turns out it needed a master reset. Unfortunately that means I lost all my tracks and waypoints

Oh well, at least I didn't have to buy a new one!
