Default Team 6mR Vancouver - Classic 6 Meter Racing

For those who are not aware, there are a number of classic International 6 Meter Class boats located in Vancouver - in various states of repair.

SASKIA II (KC 19), restored in 2005, is currently developing an active racing program for West-coast and North American competition.

CA VA (KC 12) recently had her keel removed, and will soon be shipped to Saltspring Island for a full restoration. She is expected to return to competition sometime during the 2011 season.

Most recently, SASKIA II attended the 2010 Six Meter North American Championships. With Olympian Ross MacDonald at the helm, The team finished 3rd over-all and 1st in the Classics Division.

More boats are being considered for restoration, as there are very serious plans to revive and build-up the English Bay fleet. If you are interested in classic 6 Meter racing, would like an opportunity to sail on one, or are available in 2011 to join our pool of crew members, please feel free to e-mail the team at 6mrvancouver@gmail.com. Tell us a bit about your experience, what positions you prefer and the rest will take care of itself.

We hope to have SASKIA II out in the spring for team-development and practice dates.

GALLANT returns to defend her 2009 World Championship, and LLANORIA returns to Helsinki where she won the 6 Meter Olympic Gold metal in 1952.

We will try to up-date the blog as often as possible in the next week, so follow this thread or check out the team's site for more information:

Racing started today (Monday) after a 2-hour postponement due to wind. Tune-up racing on Sunday was a wet and wild ride, with 6-foot breaking seas and 20-30 knots of Baltic wind.

The Pacific Northwest fleet is looking very strong, with GALLANT and LLANORIA duking it out for 1st and 2nd all weekend, and SASKIA II close behind in the top ten. For some great pro-photography images of the racing, check out this website:

In that photo it looks like the kite was hoisted inside the fore stay.

I noticed that too. In fact, it appears to be inside the forestay, but outside the genoa halyard.

Maybe it's just the foot of the sail that is caught on a hank?

Yeah, we've got big spectra hanks with a big plastic "handle" hook on one end. We have been experiencing a bit of catching on the genoa.

Plus, it looks like someone may have been a bit over-trimmed at that point. No idea who that was

(can't get away with anything around here )

Default 2012 6mR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Several North American 6-meter boats made the trek to Sweden this year, to participate in the European Championship. This included 2 boats from the Pacific Northwest - GALLANT (KC 10), with Ross MacDonald at the helm, and LLANORIA (US 83) with Eric Jespersen driving.

Our boats finished 1st and 2nd, including straight bullets for GALLANT on day 1 of racing!!
