Default Pleasure Craft Operator Card & Boat Safety Course

Hello,

Where is the cheapest place to get both of these tickets?

I have been granted CYA equivalency but the powerboat tickets I have are not recognised, apparently my advanced powerboat certificate doesn't count!

Go online for PCOC. Find a coupon. I saved 50% a couple years ago.

Boat Safety, look into the Safety at Sea courses WVYC and BC sailing offer.

no, our government doesn't seem to care if your are blind, just give the some money and you get your operators license. There is no other requirement to operate a boat. good thinking, eh?

optional things to have,
Radio operators license
first aid
Safety at sea

well tbh your half way there at least you have to have a licence and demonstrate something, in europe its up to the discretion of whoever owns the waterway or storage facility, most actually require you to have a certificate of a suitable level to demonstrate you know the pointy goes forward but you can (and many people do) just buy a boat and rock up

ROC-M isn't exactly optional, it is just hard to get caught transmitting without a license.

I don't think Transport Canada gets any money from the licensing, just the "school" that issues it. So online sources like Boater Exam are just profiting individuals by "selling" licenses. If you go to RCM-SAR or Power Squadron to get the PCOC, at least the money is going back in to local boating safety initiatives (albeit it might be a bit more expensive than payuscashandgetalicense.com).

OP's case is a little different because he has the skills from another country and needs to get the PCOC on a technicality, but personally I believe throwing money to the "cheap and easy" alternatives is just exacerbating the lack of boater safety and knowledge in this country. It is rewarding companies to do the bare minimum to make a buck and creates incentive to not attend real boating safety courses where effort is actually put in to teach boating safety.

*steps off soap box*

The Pleasure Craft Certificate was really a response to a bunch of speedboat guys on Ontario lakes ramping up and over other boats.

It may not be much but at least it is a step in right direction... who knows, maybe in another couple of decades they may increase the requirement.

Apparently it is so successful we don't require a Coast Guard any longer!

Post PCOC Card and Boat Safety course

I think I'll look online, our local community center is putting on the PCOC course and Marine Radio operators course $95 EACH- Yikes

Good thing my baby will be out of the water getting repairs for a while and I can wait to find a course I can afford!
