Default Summer Solstice Race

I see that Tidley Cove has this on their schedule but no details.

After talking to many people who have done this race last year and informally in years past I would like to participate.

I decided to skip the single-handed race because I not quite back in shape yet but am interested in trying a double-handed race.

Does anyone have anymore details about course and start times etc. For those of us with kids and commitments would like to know what to plan for. I understand the plan is to sail overnight and around the southern strait. I have been an advocate for an afternoon start so that the night part comes sooner in the energy scale. Means the race committee could finish everyone in the daylight the next day without having to spend all night on station.

Is this race going to be strict and serious, which means I need a PHRF cert or can I be given a provisional rating as with jack & jill racing in the past?

Is there going to be a significant group of boats for this race. Who is in? or at least interested?

Ian,

This race was formulated out of two things that I have been doing for years, namely Summer Solstice is my birthday and I have either sailed from Sun Up to Sun Down on the 21st, or I have sailed 24 hours on the 21st. We came up with a Double Handed 24 hour time limit sail last year, from a mark off of RVYC to Snake Island and back. We had some sort of time staggering as I know the small boats started in the morning and I started at 2:30 in the afternoon. It was a lot of fun and included some very fast, heavy weather and seas from midnight to around 5am on the return from Snake Island. J did 11kts under main alone.

Definetly come out and do this race. More info should be available on the TCYC site and or talk to Krikitman.

Ultraman was planning on doing this race, although my job is conspiring against me (as always...) and it is up in the air (as I might be at the time). My buddy Tom is a very experienced offshore sailor and we were looking forward to double-handling the Olson around the Strait in the dark. Although if it is only to Naniamo and back we might be home before the pub closes...

I was also born on the Summer Solstice, but the good thing is this year, due to the dates, we will be able to have dinner with our families on our birthdays!

I drafted up the SIs today and hopefully we'll get them approved and posted to the website in the next couple of days. Registration and payment will be through the TCYC web site, as usual.

The format should be basically the same as last year, as it seemed to work fairly well. This means starts ranging from 11:00 am to mid afternoon depending on rating, and a course running from Jericho, to Halibut Banks, around Snake Island and back to Jericho).

Regarding PHRF certs, Ian, the official stance is that they are required, but we'd hate to eliminate a keen competitor for want of a piece of paper. What I'd suggest is that if you are wanting to compete but don't have (and can't get) a cert in time, that you drop a note to me with adequate documentation of what your number should be (all the usual prop, sail code and other info, plus some notes on your boat's particular unique build status and how this affects it base rating). Make sure it's all calc'd out so the work is done.

I'll then run it by the executive and hopefully we can get something provisional approved for you.

That said, shouldn't you be able to get an official rating number by June 19 anyway?

Cheers,
Simon

It's staggered starts, but the results will be based on elapsed times, corrected for PHRF handicap.

The idea is to make it so that the boats are together on the course and finish at similar times, instead of having the fast boats done at midnight and the slow boats trailing in at 5:30 a.m.

I was planning on doing it with the WEASEL this year. Niko; was planning on doing it too with his boat SARANDIS. I also understood that Viggo Lison was going to do it with his boat AQUA PERLA.

Sounds like there could be quite a turn out.

I hope the conditions are a little more consistent this year... nothing like drifting for 12 hours to Halibut Bank and then within 1 hour beating through 25 kts trying to figure out if you can make it around Snake Island. In the dark.

I'm not bringing any beer and carbs.

Well, I have all the forms filled out. On Monday I will fax them over to BCSailing. Should have a "ligit" cert by race time.
